Bridge design + bridge engineering

We are experienced bridge architects and bridge engineers. We design a wide array of different bridge forms for councils, architects, contractors and developers. Our passion is designing footbridges and cycle bridges.

Concept bridge design

Concept bridge design is the fun part of the process. If you have a problem that a bridge might help solve, get in touch – we understand budgets are tight early on in a project, so if your idea inspires us we can often provide bridge design concepts free of charge or “at cost” to help get the project off the ground.

All our concept bridge designs can be delivered with high-quality 3D artistic visualizations. This means you see what you are getting, and can inspire others when seeking funding and consulting with stakeholders.

Design and construct (D&C) tendering

Our team has previous experience working on some of the largest D&C tenders in New Zealand history (Waterview Alliance, Hamilton Bypass, Ngaruawahia Bypass). We use this experience to develop streamlined, cost-effective bridge designs and work with constructors to meet scope while challenging “conventional design”. Our cost-effective tenders are highly competitive.

Detailed bridge design

Detailed design is the stage where we turn a concept into a set of drawings and specifications that can get consent and be built. We use sophisticated analysis software to develop structural solutions that meet the NZ Bridge Design Codes, and we use our wealth of New Zealand-specific bridge design experience to produce details that are cost-effective and easy to build.

We are experienced in designing bridges with the following characteristics:

  • Bridge types: Beam bridges, arch bridges, suspension bridges, truss bridges, cable-stay bridges
  • Materials: Steel, composite steel, reinforced concrete, pre-stressed concrete, timber, glulaminated timber
  • Static and dynamic soil interaction using winkler springs
  • Full seismic design to NZTA Bridge Manual 3rd Edition and/or NZS1170.5
  • Liquefaction induced lateral spreading of bridge abutments
  • Composite bridge design to AS5100.6
  • Durability and coatings specification for timber and steel structures
  • Assessment of chloride effects in concrete structures
  • Wind analysis to NZS1170.3
  • Wind aerodynamics to BD49
  • Pedestrian footfall excitation to Eurocodes

Cost estimation for bridge designs

For cost estimation services we use Les Lewer of True-cost NZ. Les is a qualified QS (NDQS) with experience in pricing infrastructure and bridges. True-cost is our preferred cost estimation partner because of Les’ previous collaboration working on projects such as Soljak Footbridge, Alford Footbridge and the Hīnaki Eel Trap Footbridge.

Bridge design documentation

Once the detailed design process is complete, we deliver a set of drawings and specifications. This is a comprehensive and easy-to-understand package that can be easily peer reviewed, consented, and built with minimum fuss.

Our documentation is supported by a Producer Statement (PS1) which is required for building consent.

Building consenting of bridge designs

We apply for your Building Consent. The bridge engineers who design your project are the best people to submit and respond to consent queries, which generally results in a faster process.

Bridge construction tendering 

We can help clients create a ready-for-market tender based on quality, detailed drawings and documentation. Our Bridge Engineers work with clients to help communicate in simple terms the strengths and weaknesses of each of the constructors’ propositions so you can make an “apples with apples” assessment.

Bridge construction monitoring

During construction we give engineering support to contractors and clients to make sure the completed structure matches the design. This is a key part of the Building Consent process. At the end of construction our Bridge Engineers will produce a site monitoring certificate (PS4) so you can get a code of compliance certificate and open the bridge.

Having Bridge Engineers on site means we can collaborate with you and your contractors. This hands-on approach reduces the chance of any costly issues arising and pro-actively speeds up any rectifications that might be required.
