Here is a sneak peek of the Toki Poutangata Footbridge almost ready for delivery to site.
We are proud to announce that the bridge is to be the FIRST IN NZ to be coated with a fluoropolymer paint system. This is a state-of-the-art bridge paint system that is expected to remain looking good for in excess of 25 years.
Traditionally, 25-year and/or 40-year bridge paint systems when applied to architectural structures are significantly handicapped by the degradation of the coloured topcoat system. Although the whole bridge paint system is designed for 25/40 years, the topcoat is often in need of touch-up and or total re-coat within the first 10 to 15 years. Where access for most bridges is difficult (and expensive) this is not a good outcome for clients. Fluoropolymers have recently been discussed favorably in the latest 2020 edition of the NZTA “Protective Coatings for Steel Bridges” guide for offering superior top coat and architectural longevity:
As indicated in Section 7.1.3 of the NZTA Guide, the added upfront capital cost of the system is expected to be offset by the long-term commercial benefits of needing significantly less reapplication and/or touch-ups of the topcoat to maintain architectural appearance. Noting that this bridge is being funded by central government but maintained by community rate payer funds, Council’s aspiration has always been to prefer low maintenance solutions to minimise ongoing cost. On this basis adopting a fluoropolymer system is an appropriate decision.
We think the Toki Poutangata bridge is an ideal “poster-boy” for this new generation of paint system. The beautiful “seaweed” green paint and the tapering shape of the truss are intended to showcase the natural colour of Westcoast pounamu (AKA green-stone) and celebrate the form of a Toki Poutangata (ceremonial green-stone adze). It represents strength, mana, bravery and triumph, all traits and characteristics synonymous with the Buller district.
Big thanks to Duraspec NZ, A&I Coatings, and Phill Davistski (of ACI) for their help geting the coating specification right. Also hats off to RAE Engineering (fabricators) for outstanding craftmanship and Nicholson Protective Coatings (painters) for diligent paint application, with main Contractor Westreef. Big thanks must go to Buller District Council and Ngāti Waewae for embracing innovation, maintaining enthusiasm for new ideas, and bringing the “mana”. WATCH THIS SPACE….. placement of steelwork into position is not far off!
