Out and about collecting bridge vibration data – Maramataha Suspension Bridge (141m span)

Was great to get out of the office yesterday and onto the “Timber Trail” (centre of North Island). Was a beautiful crisp clear sky morning. In these photos we are collecting bridge vibration data at the Maramataha Suspension Bridge. This is NZ’s second longest suspension bridge (141m span).

We are recording bridge vibration data on behalf of the Department of Conservation (DOC). We are currently studying the real-world natural frequencies and damping ratios for these lightweight structures using our new high precision 6-axis accelerometer/gyroscopes. Intention of the bridge vibration data is to help DOC understand/quantify any potential medium or long-term pedestrian and/or wind dynamic issues for these remote bridges.

The “commute” was a 2hour tramp each way through beautiful pristine native bush… a good day!
