Overview
Westhaven Marina in Auckland is a beautiful spot with amazing views of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. The real drawcard here is the huge variety of boats moored in the large marina.
We had an opportunity to contribute to the accessibility and usability of the marina by designing a pedestrian ramp that connects the new boardwalk with the older concrete structure.
This ramp is suitable for wheelchair, bicycle and foot access.
Westhaven Marina ramp location
You can find Westhaven Marina by heading along Westhaven Drive from Auckland’s city centre Viaduct Basin area. As well as road access, there are foot and cycle paths the whole way.
The new boardwalk and ramp are on the northern side of the marina, past the Lighthouse Café.
Technical information
It’s always a challenge – a welcome one – working with a mixture of old and new structures.
This project involved a collaboration with the contractor to “build as we design”. This allowed us to respond to what the contractors found on site as they worked. We secured the ramp by bolting into the existing concrete
All materials were chosen for their suitability in a marine environment. Steel structure. Stainless steel balustrade with integrated lighting.
The surface is clad with non-slip fibre-reinforced polymer panels suitable for feet and wheels in wet conditions.
