Overview
Check out this 70-metre spanning steel space truss pipe bridge. We designed this for SEIPP Construction in 2024 as part of their works for a large pipe works installation in the South Island of New Zealand.
This 70m space truss used to support the pipe was developed using state-of-the-art buckling analyses to provide confidence that the bridge could span the full 70m in its most economical form. The outcome was 25% lighter than the client’s specimen design. The 70m long structure weighed less than 15 tonnes and allowed a <20t overall lift with pipe pre-installed. This lightweight lift – with pipe preinstalled! – was quicker and safer than other bridge forms and solutions. Total installation of superstructure and pipe was done in a single day!
This clever bridge design places the pipe inside a steel sleeve made of multiple sections. We didn’t want to weld the sections together, which would damage the internal corrosion protection. So the sleeve is connected using proprietary Victaulic joints that keep its protective coating intact.
